Duo with Orchestra

Mandolin, Guitar and strings

Norbert Sprongl (1892-1983)
Concerto op. 106 for mandolin, guitar and strings
Duration: 16 minutes
published by: manuscript

Norbert Sprongl from Austria was among the first composers after 1945 to seriously turn to the mandolin and include it in his compositions. Thus his double concerto is the first one for this combination and was premiered in 1996 by Duo Ahlert & Schwab.

Rodney Newton(*1942) Concerto da Cemera Nr.1 for mandolin, guitar and strings
Duration: 10 minutes
published by: manuscript

Newton is an all-round musician. He studied composition and percussion, played in many professional British ensembles, worked in publishing and today mainly does arrangements and teaching in film-music. The British composer's double concerto does deliberately follow a neo-baroque disposition. But the versatile rhythms of the first and last movement rather remind of works by Igor Strawinsky. The concerto was premiered in 2005 by Duo Ahlert & Schwab.

Jaime M.Zenamon (*1953)
Itajacurú Op.143 for guitar, mandolin and strings
Duration:ca. 17 minutes
published by: Edition Corvus

Jaime Zenamon is one of the most often performed living guitar composers. He has dedicated this double concerto to Duo Ahlert & Schwab. The concert's name refers to a place in the Brazilian rainforest, and it is written in the typical brazilian instrumental style.

Concerts for mandolin, guitar and orchestra

Jan Truhlar (1928-2007) Bad Haller Romanze op.94 for mandolin, guitar and orchestra
(mandolin, guitar, strings, flute, oboe, 2 clarinettes in B, bassoon, 2 horns in F, trumpet in B, trombone, percussion and timpani)
Duration: 10 minutes
published by: manuscript

Czech composer Jan Truhlar has dedicated this concerto to Duo Ahlert & Schwab. Even though Truhlar was open to modern composing techniques he often wrote in an easily accessible tonal style. Thus this concert, too, is much loved by audiences.

Angelo Gilardino (*1941)
"Fiori di Novembre"
(mandolin, guitar, strings, flute, oboe, english horn, clarinette in D, bassoon and timpani)
Duration: 25 minutes
published by: Berben

Gilardino is very likely the most important persona for guitar music in Italy. He already ended his career as a soloist in the 80ies, and since then fully focused on composing and publishing guitar music. His solo- and chambermusic for guitar has to be rated among the most important music in the whole repertoire for guitar. This concerto is his first work for mandolin. In 1999 Duo Ahlert & Schwab did the German premiere of this piece.

Barry Mills (*1949)
Concert
(mandolin, guitar, strings, 2 flutes, 2 oboen, 2 clarinettes in B, 2 bassoon, horn and harp)
