Concert trip to Italy

19. - 29.August 2004

Three years ago we had for the first time been guests at the International Guitar Festival in Lagonegro in the deep South of Italy. We were very happy about being invited again for this summer. As last time, we haven't just been there for a recital, but also as jury members for their international guitar competition and guitar music of the 20th century competition. All participants of the festival stayed at a beautifully restored and wonderfully situated former convent complex in the mountains.

During the festival we listened to many interesting concerts like the one with Kerena and Paul Moeller from the USA, playing cello and guitar. Also from the USA came guitarist and composer Mark Delpriora, who gave an excellent recital in the little chapel at the convent. He played two pieces, first of which was "La casa del faro" by Angelo Gilardino, dedicated to Mark. The second piece was Mark's own Sonata No. 3. This music does not only impress because of its duration of more than 45 minutes or its top notch technical difficulty, but most of all because of its compositional depth and unity belongs to the most interesting pieces the contemporary repertoire for guitar offers.

This pretty chapel was also the place for Dimitri Illarionov's recital three days later. The young Russian artist and winner of numerous big guitar competitions presented his flawless, incredibly virtuoso programme with guitar music from the 19th and 20th century to an absolutely thrilled audience. On the last evening we played the festival's final concert in a richly decorated and acustically very attractive big church in Lauria. We, too, performed mostly new music. Part of the programme was the premiere of "dead heat", a composition dedicated to us by the British composer Jonathan Jackson.
After our work as jury-members and the usual daily practising, we also had a lot of free time left to enjoy the most joyful company of all the other musicians and people there, the always perfect weather, excellent food and the sea. Greetings and a big Thank you! to everyone there, especially to Pino Racioppi and Antonio Brigante, and everyone else from the Amici della Musica in Lagonegro, who, by the way, have been awarded this year's 8° Premio Sirino d'Argento for their outstanding efforts for culture in the region. Congratulations!
